Feedback from a student of the Department of Tourism and Hotel and Restaurant Business on studying under the ERASMUS+ program at Vidzeme University (Latvia)

          We are pleased to share another feedback on studying abroad under the ERASMUS+ program from Mariia Telelina, a student of the Department of Tourism and Hotel and Restaurant Business:

          “One of the biggest difficulties was combining studies at two universities at once and having almost daily English lessons with a tutor. Sometimes it was hard because of deadlines, various tasks, and fatigue. There were moments when I just wanted to rest, but I had to study late into the night. At first, it was also difficult for me to answer questions in English during classes because I was afraid of making a mistake. But over time, I realized that everyone treated it normally—no one laughed or judged me—and the most important thing is simply not to be afraid to speak. After a few months, I became much more confident and started communicating in English more calmly.

          During these 5 months, I had many bright moments and emotions. We spent a lot of time together with exchange students and Latvian friends. We often walked around the city, held evenings with music and conversations, went on picnics, watched movies, and traveled together. Almost every day during Erasmus+ was special. Together, we traveled around Latvia and even other countries, tried new food, learned about different cultures, and simply enjoyed student life. Even simple evenings in the dorm kitchen were warm and unforgettable, as everyone gathered together, talked about life, listened to music, and laughed a lot. This trip changed me significantly. I became more independent, confident, and open to new things. I learned not to be afraid of changes and to step out of my comfort zone. Before Erasmus+, I was very nervous about meeting new people and speaking English, but this experience helped me become much braver.

          My main advice to students: do not be afraid of new opportunities. If you feel scared, it likely means this opportunity is truly important to you. Always try new things and believe in yourself, because that is how we grow and become stronger. Even if you feel like you don’t have enough knowledge or experience, try anyway. Erasmus+ gives much more than just an education. It gives emotions, friends, travels, memories, and experience that will stay with you for a lifetime. There is a quote that I really like: «When it gets too hard, remember: right now you are building the path to your best future.» — Rodion Scott

          I am very grateful to the Erasmus+ program for such wonderful opportunities for young people. Thanks to Vidzeme University, I was able to experience true student life, make new friends, and see the world. I am deeply thankful to all the people who were by my side during these 5 months. It was an incredible experience that I will never forget, and I really hope to return to Latvia again someday.”
