Guest Lecture by Professor Paulo Lourenço
On 21 November 2025, the Department of Welding Technologies and Construction of Chernihiv Polytechnic National University hosted an online guest lecture by Professor Paulo B. Lourenço from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Minho (Portugal). The topic of the lecture was “Non-Destructive Methods for Assessing the Technical Condition of Buildings and Structures with Practical Case Studies.”
Professor Lourenço is a renowned expert in the field of non-destructive testing and diagnostics of historical building structures. During the lecture, he presented modern approaches used in leading research institutions around the world to assess the technical condition of such buildings. He emphasized the importance of an integrated approach that combines structural analysis and non-destructive testing tools, as this allows for a deeper understanding of how structures actually behave, the mechanisms of damage, potential risks during further operation, and helps select optimal restoration strategies.
The lecture also featured a series of practical case studies demonstrating the restoration of load-bearing capacity in historical building elements while preserving their authenticity.
The lecture was attended by students and academic staff of the educational programs Industrial and Civil Engineering, Architecture and Design, Welding Technologies and Equipment, Automotive Transport, and Mechanical Engineering. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the potential for integrating European methodologies into the educational process and technical inspection practices in Ukraine.
The event became an important step in strengthening international cooperation and enhancing the quality of training for specialists in civil engineering and related fields at Chernihiv Polytechnic National University.
We express our sincere gratitude to Professor Paulo Lourenço and to everyone who participated.
Looking forward to future meetings!
